Prevent a Caregiving Injury With These Tips

A woman who knows how to prevent a caregiving injury prepares to help an older woman transfer from her wheelchair.

The data is quite startling: over half of all caregivers suffer from injuries while lifting or moving older individuals. With many family members stepping into caregiving roles, it’s imperative that you learn the right techniques for safely lifting and transferring to prevent a caregiving injury and protect both your own health and that of the older adult you assist.

To guide you through these challenges, our care team offers key advice to help reduce the risk of injuries. These important guidelines will improve both your safety and effectiveness during physical interactions with an older loved one, avoid injuries, and enhance your confidence as a caregiver.

Please follow these steps in the order listed:

  • Place one foot on a stool next to the bed if it is low to reduce lower back pressure.
  • Position the wheelchair very close to the bed and perform a quick check to ensure it is secure. Confirm that the brakes are locked and the armrests and footrests are retracted.
  • Clearly explain the transfer process to the person you are helping, ensuring they are ready and know where they are being moved to. Start the transfer with a clear countdown, “1-2-3.”
  • If the person is able, ask them to put their hands on the bed to aid the transfer.
  • Maintain close proximity to the individual for better support.
  • Bend at the knees instead of the waist to keep your spine and neck straight, distributing your weight equally on both feet. Activate your core and back muscles to maintain proper lifting form.
  • Use your legs for lifting strength and your arms for stabilizing the person.
  • Rotate by pivoting on one foot instead of twisting your body to avoid injury.
  • Use a transfer belt for additional stability and support around the person’s waist during the transfer.
  • Encourage the person to grasp the wheelchair armrests for support if they are able.
