If you’re battling diabetes, you may find physical activity can be a challenge, but it is an excellent tool to help manage your health. What are the best exercises for diabetics? While studies prove it is unclear which types of exercise (cardio, weights, walking, resistance training, etc.) are best for people with diabetes, it is important to at least work-out three days per week doing “something.”
Exercises for Diabetics
Below are example activities that can assist in your goal for improved physical health.
Aerobic (Cardio) Exercise
This is any type of activity that gets your blood pumping! Be sure to start slowly at first, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. Once you are able, aim for 30 minutes, 3-5 times a week.
- Bicycling
- Dancing
- Gardening
- Golfing
- Swimming
- Walking
Strength Training
With this activity, you will build muscles and maintain the ones you already have. Strive for achieving these activities 1-2 times each week.
- Climbing Stairs
- Lifting Weights
- Tai Chi
- Resistance Bands
Flexibility and Balance
This activity includes anything that keeps your muscles flexible, and your mind and body centered. These activities should be done at least 3 times per week or as part of your warm up/cool down routine for other physical activities.
- Stretching
- Yoga
Be sure to use all precautions while exercising, and of course, speak to your doctor before and during any exercise routine. These exercises will not only be beneficial for those battling diabetes, but it can also aide those with high blood pressure, obesity, depression, fatigue, and possibly dementia.
