It’s the time of year for family gatherings, elaborate dinners and presents beneath the tree. For some, it may be the first time a break has allowed time to see our aging parents. When visiting aging parents, it’s important to look for possible signs indicating that they may need personal or medical assistance in their home.
Appearance. If Mom, Dad or Grandma and Grandpa live alone and are aging, take a close look at their appearance.
- Are their clothes dirty or stained?
- Do they appear to have bathed recently?
- Is their hair brushed and groomed?
- Have they brushed their teeth?
- Have they lost weight since you last seen them?
Mental Status. Listen to what your aging parent says and how they speak.
- Are they current with events of today?
- Did they sleep a lot while you were visiting?
Surroundings. Surveying your loved one’s environment will help determine if your aging parent is eating and living healthy. Open their refrigerator. Check the medicine cabinet. Take note of their countertops.
- Is there expired food in the refrigerator or cabinets? Is there any food at all?
- Have they forgotten to refill or take their medications?
- Are there unpaid bills or unopened mail piling up on the counter?
- Is the housekeeping being done?
Have there been significant declines in any of the above? If so, it may be time to seek assistance for your aging parents and/or grandparents. Sometimes, a simple few hours per week can do wonders. As difficult as it may be, remind yourself that by being proactive you will not only provide safety for your loved one, but may also keep them happy and healthy for years to come.
